Annual Giving FAQs

What is Annual Giving and why is it important?

Annual Giving is the single-most important and impactful fundraising effort at The Rumson Country Day School, bridging the gap between tuition and the true cost of educating each student. As at other independent schools, Annual Giving dollars support the school’s current operating budget and are a vital part of our financial model and our program. These dollars are used where the needs are greatest and can also help RCDS respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances.

Why not just increase tuition?

Raising tuition would likely result in the loss of many valuable students whose families could not afford the increase. A drop in enrollment would lead to cuts in both educational programs and staff. Equally as important, RCDS values its economic diversity. A strong, growing Annual Giving program allows RCDS to keep tuition affordable while maintaining the superior quality of education for every child, and likewise enables the school to attract and retain an outstanding faculty.

What is “the gap”?

The gap refers to the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating each child. The gap is nearly$3,433 per student for the 2015-16 school year. We encourage families who have the means to give “the gap.”

Why is participation so crucial?

Participation in Annual Giving demonstrates solidarity and an understanding of the culture of philanthropy within the RCDS community. It also increases the likelihood that RCDS will receive funding from corporations and foundations who ask about our participation rate before providing us with additional funding. Strong annual giving participation positively influences prospective families, major donors, and charitable foundations to give to The Rumson Country School.

What are the giving levels at The Rumson Country Day School?

Every gift truly does make a difference. Even small donations can make a big collective impact and inspire much larger gifts. Every contribution, of every size, counts toward our participation rate.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to support the school at a higher level, leadership giving levels are as follows:

  • Brownstone Benefactors: $20,000+
  • Founders Circle: $10,000-$19,999
  • Green & White Society: $5,000-$9,999
  • Gator Pride: $2,500-$4,999
  • 1926 Club: $1,926-$2,499

RCDS recognizes those who make leadership contributions to Annual Giving through invitations to special events throughout the year and in our Annual Donor Report. Our leadership societies serve as benchmarks for those members of our community who can make major gifts to RCDS Annual Giving.

Who contributes?

Each year, many parents, alumni, trustees, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, and other friends of RCDS contribute to Annual Giving.

When should I make my gift?

We kindly ask our current parents to make their gift or pledge by November 1. Early pledges and gifts reduce overall resources and ultimately increase the value of the donation; they also allow the Board of Trustees to more successfully budget for the coming school year. That being said, everyone has until June 30 to make payment on an Annual Giving pledge.

What is the dollar goal for Annual Giving?

Annual Giving goals change yearly, but the purpose remains constant – to sustain excellence at RCDS. The goal for 2015-2016 Annual Giving is $600,000.

Can I restrict my gift?

Annual Giving directly supports the School’s operating budget, which touches all aspects of life at RCDS. There are opportunities for restricted giving, but we ask everyone to make their unrestricted gift to Annual Giving first. If you are interested in making a restricted gift, please contact Jessica Goski, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 732-842-0527 ext. 1142 orjgoski@rcds.org.
