Read some recent news to learn more about the great things happening at our school! The Jayne S. Carmody School – The finishing touches are being put on the new facilities that will be home to The Carmody School at RCDS starting this school year. To honor long-time Lower School Head Mrs. Carmody, who retired this past spring, RCDS announced in February that the program formerly know as “School Within a School” would be renamed The Carmody School. The new facilities are located on the second floor of the William I. Riker Academic Center, in what was formerly a multi-purposed seminar room and the open-air second story of the school library.
New Flexible Classroom Brings Variety to RCDS Students – Also new to Riker Hall this year is a flexible classroom that was constructed in the second-floor common space above Skirkanich Commons. This new classroom will be available to all grades of students, from Beginners through 8, for special projects, events, and programming. RCDS Auditorium Gets Refreshed – The RCDS auditorium is the RCDS Auditorium is undergoing a facelift, as you can see from this “demo-day” photo, and new seating, flooring, lights, and sound. Head of School Whitney Slade recommended this additional summer capital project to the Board in the spring, noting that all Beginner through Grade 8 students will benefit from the upgrade for their class plays, assemblies, drama productions and more. “Summer of Innovation” – RCDS celebrated an outstanding inaugural year of expanded summer camp programming! The school thanks the more than 200 students who participated in eight weeks of activities, from Debate and Drama to D.R.E.A.M. (Design, Robotics, Engineering, Arts and Math), Skill Boosters and Early-Childhood Programs. Click here for images from our summer of fun. Horizons at RCDS – Congratulations also go to the 210 students who have just completed their summer with Horizons. For six weeks, low-income K-8 students from neighboring communities attended RCDS to focus on Reading, Math, Science, Performing Arts, and even Debate this year, which was a first! Special thanks go to the more than 40 RCDS alumni who volunteered their time this summer! To see photos from the 19th summer of Horizons at RCDS, click here. Fond Farewell
On June 2, 2015, nearly 300 RCDS community members gathered together at the Rumson Country Club Riverhouse to extend a fond farewell and best wishes to some of Rumson Country Day’s longest serving and most beloved faculty members: Mrs. Carmody, Mrs. Figarola, Mr. & Mrs. Garside, and Mrs. Mansfield. Guests ranges from current parents, Board members and faculty to alumni, past parents, past faculty members, and former trustees, signifying the breadth of lives touched by these teachers. | Summer 2015 Alumnus Return to RCDS Rumson Country Day was pleased to have alumnus Eric Hsia '86 recently walk through its halls again - Eric's first time since graduation! Eric, his wife, Jennifer and their daughter, Kate (pictured here), were visiting from the Bay Area and on a combined tour of the East Coast and walk down memory lane, with stops at Jennifer's home town of Bryn Mawr, PA; her alma mater, University of Pennsylvania; the Statue of Liberty and New York City, where Eric and Jennifer first met; and, of course, RCDS! Highlights of the school visit were: Eric's recollection of his performance as King Arthur in his third grade play when visiting the auditorium, showing Jennifer and Kate his name on special award plaques on display in the school, and running into Mr. Scott, who instantaneously shared stories and fond memories of the Class of 1986 - what a memory! Eric is currently a Venture Partner with TransLink Capital in Palo Alto, California. He is a founder of Eternal Capital and a private investor, board member and advisor to public and private technology companies. He has led investments in technology, media and telecommunications companies in China, India, Korea and the United States. Eric writes, "Greetings to my fellow Class of 1986ers and thanks to my wonderful teachers at RCDS who provided me an opportunity to learn, grow and extend my horizons." RCDS welcomes all alumni to return to campus. Please contact Jessica Goski at jgoski@rcds.org to schedule a date to visit your alma mater!
