The 2s are Here and Thriving!

At The Rumson Country Day School, the school motto, “Learn for Life,” now begins at age two. RCDS proudly welcomed its youngest learners with the launch of a five-day program for two-year-olds that began this fall. The newest members of the Gator family are now officially settled in and thriving in their new learning environment.

The introduction of the 2s Program marks an exciting milestone in the school’s commitment to providing a joyful and enriching beginning to a lifelong educational journey. Included under the umbrella of the Early Childhood Center (ECC) division, the 2s benefit from RCDS’s time-tested approach to education. Each child learns in a small, nurturing classroom that emphasizes individualized attention and play-based learning. Inspired by the principles of the Reggio-Emilia philosophy, the program is child-centered and hands-on, honoring the idea that even our youngest learners have agency over their learning. Activities and projects are designed based on students’ interests and driven by their own questions to promote engagement. With a strong focus on social-emotional growth and an introduction to early literacy and numeracy, the program helps children build confidence and curiosity as they prepare to transition into the 3s Nursery Program.

Just like their older peers, the 2s enjoy specialist-led classes that enrich their days and spark new interests. They participate in Music, Library, and Science, and take part in the Sticks and Sprouts program, an outdoor exploration experience that connects children with nature, once a week. Each “Specials” class is taught by passionate, expert instructors who have mastered the art of engaging early learners in their respective subjects. Students experience lessons in every special at least once and often multiple times throughout the week.

“With the launch of the 2s Program, RCDS reaffirms its belief that even at the youngest ages, children are capable, curious, and full of potential, and that learning through exploration and inquiry nurtures both understanding and a lifelong love of learning,” said Head of Lower School Lea Prendergast. “The School community celebrates this joyful new chapter as its youngest Gators learn, grow, and thrive together.”
